  • 2018-04-12 Simon to contact openstreetmap.cymru. The LWG will allow use of domain name on the condition that if there's local group in the future, they will have to concede control to them and get agreement in writing, so that if domain expires it doesn't get squatted on.

  • 2018-10-11 Simon to ask the board to contact the Working Groups about the NDA and ask people to sign up.
  • 2018-11-08 Simon to ask William to provide information about the Canadian OGL variants he is interested in, in a systematic format.
  • 2018-12-13 GDPR: We need to disclose the details about our hosted bookkeeping solution, Xero (they host in NZ and US), in the privacy policy.
  • 2019-01-10 Simon to draft text to developers of apps related to geo/mapping, having OSM in their names or using variations of our logo.

  • 2019-04-11 Simon to add LWG past guidance which has not gone into the attribution page.
  • 2019-04-11 Simon to setup ICANN ™ clearing house account.
  • 2019-06-13 LWG members to look at mobile app attribution of other map providers.
  • 2019-06-13 Simon to call the company that works with DJI.
  • 2019-07-11 Jim and Lucas to provide feedback on the Attribution Guidance.
  • 2019-07-11 Kathleen to draft one-line attribution statement for the Tile Licence and get feedback from the LWG.

Reportage

  • SP Added text wrt to accounting service Xero to privacy policy
  • SP ICANN clearing house account setup done, one trademark (OpenStreetMap) added for now.
  • SP call wrt DJI, DJI is using data from a third party supplier that has contacted us, the missing attribution was due to a change in course of DJIs use of their service mid-stream, have provided us with a draft attribution page, is in principal OK, the attribution text itself needs to be easier to find (aka an index or similar on the page). Feedback provided in that respect.
  • Tile licence: The board has asked the LWG to consult with the community.
  • Attribution guidance: Kathleen has sent screenshots showing how other mapping providers attribute on smartphones.

Attribution Guidance

Draft (snapshot on 2019-08-08)

A portion of the meeting was spent on reading the document.

Points of possible disagreement

  • How to determine the size of a map that is considered insubstantial.
  • How attribution should be provided on mobile devices or other small screens.

Points mentioned during discussion

  • Important for attribution to be visible.
  • We have to think about multiple data sources on mobile and other situations.
  • Reasonable attribution on websites should depend on how big the map is.
  • One of the reasons that attribution on smartphones links out to separate webpages could be that you can keep the page updated more easily than the app, where you would have to push an update.
  • Devs/designers might not know the size of user screen, as they will make a map that will work on as many versions of phones as they can.
  • Mobile apps: many alternatives, such as pop-ups/splash screens/etc. We should let the user choose.

On attribution by other providers

  • Big difference between web maps and maps on mobile apps (Gmaps website zoom on Mexico: attribution changes but not on mobile).
  • Attribution on mobiles linking out to separate webpages might be because you can keep the page updated more easily than the app, where you would have to push an update.

On measurements

  • Pixels are not a stable measurement. Depend on how much the user zooms in the browser which is outside of the control of the website designer.
  • Suggestion of using device-independent measurement.

Action item: Jim and Lucas to provide feedback on the document.

Any Other Business

Tile Licence

Choice between going along with original proposal or crafting an attribution statement which meets the requirements of ODbL.

Action item: Kathleen to draft one line attribution statement and get feedback from LWG.

Next Meeting
