DWG activity report for Q1, 2021
Statistics
520 tickets were created in OTRS in this quarter (140 of these were copied from the web site issue tracker). Issues of minor importance are sometimes handled directly in the web site issue tracker and will therefore not be counted.
A total of 746 messages were received in the context of these tickets, and 1344 messages and memos were written by DWG members.
61 tickets were follow-on tickets to older issues, 27 were discarded as spam. 346 tickets created in this quarter were closed, and additionally, 82 tickets from previous periods were closed.
The median time for the first (non-automated) response to tickets was 4 hours.
11 DWG members were active in the quarter (88% of cases were handled by the five busiest members).
The majority of tickets were handled in English (366), but we also used the languages German (23), Dutch (12), Russian (11), and Italian (5). (We will also often include auto-translated versions of English messages in responses.)
Generally, all these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt because edge cases can be mis-counted in our statistics. Also, due to reorganisation or cleaning out of old information, it is possible that previous quarters shown in the above graph differ slightly from the numbers published at the time.
Comment and Notable Issues
User conflict over sports clothing shops
Two users were in a conflict over tagging shops dedicated to a particular sport and, among other things, selling clothes. One user believed they were mainly sports shops, the other believed they were mainly clothes shops. Both sides of this conflict claimed that the other side was performing undiscussed mass edits of objects to match their favoured tagging scheme (and to an extent both were correct). In cases like this, we try to make both parties understand that the world is often not as simple and clear-cut as they like it to be, and that a more measured approach is required.
Increase in usage of outdoor activity apps and land owner complaints
With more outdoor activity apps appearing on the market - routing users for hiking and biking tours and allowing them to upload route recommendations - we see an increase of complaints from land owners regarding the use of private ways. As they are useful for orientation and in emergency situations, we usually explain that we would not delete such objects from our database unless they actually cease to exist; instead we assign the appropriate access tags or ask the community to do so.
Indeed we had a recent case where a land owner insisted to have a private way added to the database, visibly as dead end, because hikers frequently mistook this way for the next public way.
User conflict over a series of bicycle / mountainbike routes
Besides complaints from land owners about mountain bikes tracks on their land as above, a case was special in that both sides of the conflict were mountain bike enthusiasts, each of them sending us numerous agitated complaints claiming the other was vandalising the map by adding fictional mountainbike routes. Both sides were correct to a certain extent (both sides did indeed add some objects of dubious verifiability). At least one party was very unfamiliar with OSM and after initial threats had died down was amenable to being helped to map things in a way that matched reality. In cases like this, we try to get everyone to calm down and focus on adding verifiable data - even though unfortunately in this particular case, one of the two parties decided to stop editing in OSM.
Complaints about note closures
We get this sort of thing fairly regularly. Some users add OSM notes, which are then visible in 3rd-party applications. After a few months or years, some other users resolve those notes (because the note has not been acted on and maybe never will), and then some other users get upset, because the notes are no longer visible. Clearly OSM notes can serve a useful purpose, but there are also many places where lots of notes are added by MAPS.ME users and they are more or less just personal memos, useless to the community. In situations like this we look at the notes in question and can reopen them if deemed necesary.
Argument over road name and road importance in Iran
The road between the Iranian cities of Golpayegan and Isfahan goes through a number of other places. Residents of two of those places have been arguing (on both OSM and Wikipedia) over the relative importance of those places, and the names of roads through them. We asked for advice from an OSM contributor not from the immediate area as to the correct tagging and (after several user blocks and lots of extra accounts being created by participants in the fight to circumvent the blocks) things seem to have calmed down.
Misdirected complaint based on an attributed OSM map on a 3rd-party website
In the UK (and in many other countries) company listings such as directors' names and addresses are public, and are easily searchable at [various websites]. A third-party organisation is displaying business listings, (presumably based on this and other scrapable data) on a website that also embeds an OSM map. That map correctly says "© OpenStreetMap contributors" as required by [our license]. Some of the conflated listings data they display seems to be out of date.
Unfortunately, someone who is not very computer literate has seen this site and complained repeatedly, both to the DWG directly and via OSM's DMCA form (in capital letters), that "OpenStreetMap should remove this information from the Internet". None of the complained-about information is in OSM. We have tried to help in various ways, including suggesting that they perhaps take an evening class or similar learning a bit about how computer systems work, which might help them to understand what they are looking at.
Cases like this are most frequent with Facebook/Instagram users who complain to us about their business being in the wrong place, or wanting their location deleted. They are usually solved with a quick response of "your data is not on OSM, please contact Facebook/Instagram". In this particular case, the other party kept insisting and we kept educating for a longer time.
Asian railway mapping from undisclosed source
Another presumably single person using a number of accounts with random-letter user names was creating spacially large changesets, mostly in Asia but also in other parts of the world, editing railway infrastructure without giving any source and not responding to changeset discussions. The DWG responded swiftly when the community discovered new accounts following this scheme, and blocked them.
