== What we do ==

The Communication Working Group (CWG) is the voice of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. It is focused upon outward communication and maintaining OpenStreetMap’s presence and coherency across various official platforms, such as OSMF wiki, [https://blog.openstreetmap.org/ blog], [https://twitter.com/OpenStreetMap Twitter], [https://www.facebook.com/OpenStreetMap Facebook], [https://www.instagram.com/openstreetmap/ Instagram] and more). One of the functions of the group is also to ensure that OSMF public-facing information is up-to-date and accurate.

The Communication Working Group (CWG) is an important voice for the OSM Foundation and community. It communicates about OSM on the OSM blog and social media channels, serves as a point of contact for external inquiries, and supports the OSMF Board's public-facing communications.
The group’s main responsibilities are:

=== Primary Goals ===
* Maintaining official news/announcement channels, such as the [https://blog.openstreetmap.org/ blog] and the OpenStreetMap [https://twitter.com/OpenStreetMap Twitter] and [https://www.facebook.com/OpenStreetMap Facebook] accounts
* Responding to press and media enquiries (normally by email and typically passed on to board members or local community members) and maintaining a press kit with up-to-date OpenStreetMap-related information.
* Overseeing the OSMF website, including the maintenance of static content as well as various important living documents.
* Promoting OpenStreetMap generally and increasing community engagement

# Support communications for and about the OSM Foundation, OSM.org
Other than these direct responsibilities, the CWG plays an instrumental role in:
# Tell and amplify the many diverse stories of the OpenStreetMap community
# Respond to press and media enquiries about OSM

=== Additional Goals ===
* Supporting communications related to the annual OpenStreetMap conferences - State of the Map (international and regional).
* Supporting other working groups through volunteer engagement, retention and outreach.
* Maintaining an information centre for volunteers willing to participate in other working groups such as license, operations, etc
* Supporting and leading OSMF’s diversity ambitions
* Ensuring issues and feedback are channelled to the relevant groups and working groups
* Amplifying the voice of the community, board, and local chapters through social media channels, blog posts, etc

# Support OSMF Board communications where needed

Ideally, content produced or amplified by the CWG is evenly distributed across the pillars over the course of a year. The caveat is that some seasons are busier for some topics than others, e.g. board elections season or around OSM's birthday.

== Content Production, Translation & Ethical Considerations ==

=== Overview ===
The CWG oversees the creation of content for the official OSM blog and maintains an official public presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Mastodon, and Instagram. The CWG also "amplifies" content that is aligned with the CWG content pillars, by liking and reposting. The CWG works with OSM translators to localize content where possible, and seeks to faithfully represent the diverse stories of the entire OSM community.

=== Content Production ===

==== Sourcing Stories ====
* OSM'ers are able to submit drafts of blog or social media posts or requests for blog or social media posts to be written and published by emailing communication - at- osmfoundation.org.

* Members of the CWG also propose story ideas and draft/publish posts based on their knowledge of OSM events and topics. The [https://weeklyosm.eu Weekly OSM], [https://en.osm.town/home OSM on Mastodon], and [https://twitter.com/i/lists/718882245956780034 this list] and [https://twitter.com/i/lists/718572139960512512 this list] on X are also sources of content about the OSM community that may be amplified or used as a source for a post.

==== Writing, Editing and Publishing Stories ====
* Stories and requests for social media messages come in via the CWG email and other sources and are ticketed in Gitlab. Individual CWG members volunteer to write blog and/or social media posts, or both. The CWG reserves the right to edit any content that is submitted by the requester for grammar, clarity, and cogency.

* Individual CWG members also volunteer to reply to inquiries sent to press - at - osmfoundation.org.

==== Proposed Improvements (in 2024) ====

* Create a centrally located submission form that makes it easier for OSM'ers to share ideas, links, and drafts of content. Consider partnering with WeeklyOSM and/or other communicators in OSM to help make it easier to share OSM stories.

=== Translation ===

* The CWG is lucky to be supported by the many volunteers across the OSM community who translate blog posts into languages other than English. The CWG translation process, which is documented in the CWG Gitlab, is designed to allow the volunteers enough time to translate the blog posts ahead of publication.

=== Community Representation ===

When selecting and creating content, the CWG tries to ensure that the global OSM project and community are well-represented.

* Find a balance between the many OSM topics: ideally, 15 - 25 % of posts from each content pillar on a semi-annual and annual basis
* Represent the global community, including underrepresented voices and regions; unique or unusual topics; and a diverse range of contributions to the project
* Cast a wide net
** try to have a dedicated contact in each of the WGs and regional communities
** collaborate with the weeklyOSM and amplify its stories
** delegate a CWG member to support the OSMF board and SotM WG
** delegate a CWG member to attend meetings of the OSMF Advisory Board
** delegate a CWG member to support the OSM fundraising committee
* Language Localization: see "Translation"

=== Legal and Ethical Considerations ===

We affirm the following legal and ethical considerations so that our communications about OSM are as accessible, free, and fairly attributed as possible.

* We attribute photos clearly and correctly, including seeking permissions if needed and support the use of accessibility measures such as alternate text for photos
* We obtain permission when quoting OSM diaries or other writing wherever possible
* We are transparent about any corporate and OSM affiliations
* We strive to produce blog content in a timely manner, including following the process of requesting translations
* We strive to follow OSM's policies about open-source and free software, while acknowledging that this is not always possible with digital communications

== Monitoring and Evaluation ==

* The CWG does not use a dashboard for its social media and blog posts, which means there is single point of access for assessing engagement on social media channels. Ideally, there is a qualitative review of post engagement at the CWG monthly meeting to improve processes and build a communications strategy over time. [https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/amapanda%20%E1%9A%9B%E1%9A%90%E1%9A%8B%E1%9A%90%E1%9A%85%E1%9A%87%E1%9A%90%E1%9A%9C%20%F0%9F%8F%B3%EF%B8%8F%E2%80%8D%F0%9F%8C%88/diary/401876 This report-out])is a good example of how this kind of analysis could work.

==== Proposed Improvements (in 2024)====

* Invest in software and/or staffing to 1.) make it easier to maintain and improve OSM's online presence toward growing an external audience and 2.) make it possible to evaluate the impact of the CWG's communications on behalf of OSM.

* There is [https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/courtiney/diary/401468 a very preliminary study] of OSM communications channel data available. This project could be expanded to provide reliable data about how the community shares information. Such an analysis could support the OSM community moderators, the OSMF board, and the CWG as they seek to make sure that OSM's training, information sharing, and stories are inclusive, accessible, and well-placed for a global community.
