DWG activity report for Q1, 2023
Statistics
566 tickets were created in OTRS in this quarter (110 of these were copied from the web site issue tracker). Issues of minor importance are sometimes handled directly in the web site issue tracker and will therefore not be counted.
A total of 836 messages were received in the context of these tickets, and 1246 messages and memos were written by DWG members.
145 tickets were follow-on tickets to older issues, 78 were discarded as spam. 311 tickets created in this quarter were closed, and additionally, 224 tickets from previous periods were closed.
The median time for the first (non-automated) response to tickets was 10 hours.
10 DWG members were active in the quarter (94% of cases were handled by the five busiest members).
The majority of tickets were handled in English (446), but we also used the languages German (25), Spanish (13), French (11), Dutch (11), Russian (11), and Danish (6). (We will also often include auto-translated versions of English messages in responses.)
Generally, all these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt because edge cases can be mis-counted in our statistics. Also, due to reorganisation or cleaning out of old information, it is possible that previous quarters shown in the above graph differ slightly from the numbers published at the time.
Comment and Notable Issues
Use of incompatible data by a corporate mapper
This was a misunderstanding of the licences associated with OSM, and the source being used (wikipedia), noticed by people in the #osm-gb IRC channel. Most of the names added were corrected on the basis of the local knowledge of people in that channel.
Mechanical name edits in Ukraine
This particular issue was one of the first of a series of similar issues in Ukraine and elsewhere. In this case, people in the Ukrainian community objected to these purely mechanical changes. This was subsequently discussed at length in the forum.
Poor quality remote mapping by users employed by a large corporation
A number of users contributing low=quality buildings (for example unsquared rectangular buildings, "name=house" or not really matching the imagery) were contacted to try and get them to respond to changeset comments. Some ignored this and just created new accounts. We did get some replies, suggesting an organised editing activity, and asked at the forum if anyone had any more information, and were able to make contact based on feedback resulting from that,
Microsoft Mapbuilder
This was part of a discussion that eventually ended up here. Microsoft's contributions continue; see for example here.
Trolling within the Brazilian community
A large number of accounts brought themselves to the DWG's attention by reporting users performing QA on their obviously fake road names. It soon became clear that the users doing the reporting were the problem, and also that it was only one or two users with many aliases. Some of the names seemed to be named after friends; some were childish innuendos.
